Where can I get a new car key made?

Whilst most car key replacements go smoothly, it can get a little complicated in some cases when the original key is not present and the right tools not used. But with help from a professional auto locksmith, the job can be extremely easy and quick. You could choose to return to the dealer from whom you purchased the car from in order to obtain a replacement key, however, this can often be rather pricey. Especially if your vehicle needs to be towed to their location.

Instead, an auto locksmith (sometimes used by dealerships anyway) will be able to get you back on the road for up to 50% less than what you would pay with a dealer, and is mobile, so they can conveniently come to your location.

Determining what car key you have

Whether you choose to get in touch with an auto locksmith or dealership, determining what car key you have will help facilitate the process. All car keys are built differently, for example, a 2019 Nissan Qashqai car key would be completely different to a 1990 Nissan Micra.

To figure out what kind of car key you need replaced, you’ll need to know whether your car uses a traditional lock and key method, a transponder key or a car key fob. An auto locksmith should know this should you have any issues.

When, and if, you decide to get in touch with an auto locksmith, there will be some information that they need before replacing your car key.

What will the auto locksmith need to know?

● The cars current location.

● The year, make and model of the car.

● If possible, the VIN number of the vehicle (stamped on a metal plate on the drivers side dashboard).

● You will also need to prove ownership of the car by providing your V5 document.

If you believe that your car keys have been stolen, make sure you let the auto locksmith know, so that they can reprogramme the car in such a way that the stolen keys can no longer be used.

Auto locksmiths, like County Auto Keys, work as efficiently as possible to get you back behind the wheel quickly. It’s worth noting that the process of programming a new car key can take slightly longer when there is no original key. This is because the auto locksmith will need to search the vehicle database, using your VIN, to identify the correct key your car requires.
